Black Currant bushes..
« on: March 04, 2009, 11:14 »
Hiya,

I am wanting to take cuttings from a blackcurrant bush. Is there a correct way of doing this or just snip and pop into a pot?

Any advice appreciated.

From what I have read as I plan to do this myself, wait for the end of this season and snip a straight new growth spur and pot on as normal. I have been told by one of the chaps who is well into his fruit not to take a cutting until after it has fruited this year. Hope that helps.

The very easiest way is during the growing season to bend a growing branch down to the ground, make a small cut at where the bark will touch the earth, push it a bit into the ground and hold it down with metal 'pins' or rocks. The wound will start rooting on its own during the season. The technique is called layering.

usual way is to take hard wood cuttings in the dormant season.
Make a slit with a spade, push in around 2/3 length of cutting and firm in with your foot.
You should get around 90% success and can move the rooted plants to a permanent position the following autumn.

I'm also with Trillium on layering as several of my bushes have done it without any help from me.

Whatever method you use make sure you get cuttings from a healthy plant of a good variety - most of the new ones are far superior to the old ones
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

Have 8 good cuttings growing that I took last year.
Just cut lengths of about 6/8 buds and burried them with 4 buds in the ground.
Did not bother slitting them or using rooting powder or anything.
Should be ready for moving this Autumn

my experience with blackcurrants is that they will grow what ever you do, i stuck some in the ground upside down once as markers - they grew fine.

I make cuttings by sticking straight pieces of prunings about 12 inches long 4inches onto the ground. This works for all sorts of currants.

I agree with staffschicks. If you have some bits of blackcurrant plants just stick them in the ground and see what happens.

Just had a look at mine today and the buds on them are opening nicely and they were just sticks in the ground
