comfrey fertiliser
« on: February 16, 2013, 21:38 »
Hi all

Thinking of growing some comfrey for fertiliser for my spuds
Seems to be the best thing to use
But how long would it take to grow and make into a tea fertiliser?

Thanks dave

Depends on if you buy in plants or seeds or are using cuttings taken from established plants.

If you are growing from seed, I would imagine you would be waiting three years for it really to establish.  You can harvest the plants lightly, but want the plants to bulk up before harvesting it too heavily.

If you are using bought in plants or cuttings, you will have to wait for the second year before really harvesting heavily.

I put some cuttings in last year, so I expect to be able to make possible one harvest this year then leave the plant to build up resources for next year when I will probably give it two cut backs.

I would suggest going for the sterile Bocking 14 variety as that is not as vigorous as the common one which starts from seeds.

You usually can get it on ebay if you can't find anyone willing to give you a few roots locally.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I find that the comfrey is not ready to cut when I plant my spuds, however you could still add it as a top dressing later. It grows really quick and will be ok to use later in the year if you plant some now.

As suggested I've ordered some from fleabay, for a plot 15m x 5m what area and how many plant would you give to it?

I don't know - my 2 plants were from cuttings last year and grew fairly big (nearly 1m square in total by August after planting in June to give you an idea) only 1 plot on our site has a comfrey bed of any significant size, so I think our lot mostly use other fertilizers too...probably because most are on half plots and it gets quite big.

I'm going to try and sneak a cutting or two of Bocking into the native hedge that's being renovated next to my plot...
