I would like to learn how to

do string of onions, I had a go with my last batch but rubbish is the best way to describe it, infact treating it like my daughters hair is probably not the best way.

Any websites or pics will help

I used to plait three pieces of string in the normal way feeding in the onion stalks as I went.  I discovered that just plaiting the onion stalks without the string led to sudden collapses of the whole lot  .

Cheers,

I have been stringing onions since receiving a"Your Kitchen Garden" book from my Dad and Mum for Christmas 1976. A method of stringing onions is shown within. I have copied ever since. One other piece of advice given is "Store only sound firm bulbs, and inspect them frequently during the winter, removing any which have gone soft". Sound advice indeed.

You might be able to use these pix as a guide:

http://a-homesteading-neophyte.blogspot.com/2006/07/braiding-and-storing-onions-with.html

This is kind how I do ours.

Tip 1: Tie three together at the bottom, and then lie the dried leaves from the next onion upwards from this base, then twist this new onion round the string, over lapping it's own leaves, as this secures it really well. Then settle it down into a dip bewteen the three bottom ones.

This gives you a solid rope that will last all winter without falling apart. You can just cut off any dodgy looking ones, or ones you are going to use.

Tip 2: Don't make them too heavy or you will not be able to lift the strings up onto hooks/nails

Hope this helps  :D

I did it like I was doing my Niece's hair and just pleated them without string.   I did get my husband to hold the weight of the onions while I was doing it though.  It worked a treat and held together until I had finished using them in January.
