Is my hen broody or ill?
« on: May 25, 2010, 08:50 »
I have 5 hens, but one has decided to stay in the hen house all day and sit on all the 5 eggs. When i shifted her to collect the eggs she went into the run and agressively attacked the other 4 hens. She then went back in the hen house on her own and sat in the nesting box. She is hardly eating, is she just broody or is there something wrong with her. She, out off all the hens seems to make the most noise and takes the longest to lay an egg.

arh yes defintely sounds broody, you should try and collect the eggs as soon as you can, unless you want her to be broody and hatch some eggs.   I have a sneaky feeling my barnie is going broody aswell, ive just been out there this morning and she is usually the last to lay and there she was sitting on the amber stars egg so quickly removed that,  your just gonna have to keep removing her from the nest box until the broodiness passes         nickyx

our wyandotte turned into a 'turkey' fluffed on and made turkey noises when we tried to lift her off.

we were advised to dunk her bum in some cold water to cool her off and break the broody cycle, we put her in the penal run, which has a slabbed floor , gave her water and food, she soon came round

Still acting broody, we are moving her everyday from the nesting box into the run and closing the door so we know she is eating and drinking whilst she is out.  She fluffs all her feathers up and attacks the other hens and tries desperatly to get back into the nesting box.  Does dunking her bum in cold water work or is it an old wives tale??

personally i dont know if dunking them in cold water works or not,  i think wot you have to do now is put her in a wire cage or something to that effect so air circulates underneath her, pop food and water in with her and try that.   nickyx

when they are broody they become verm warm underneath, some even peck their own feathers out, all to do with keeping the eggs and chicks warm, the cooling, and i have been told it needs to be quite cool, very quickly reduces their temperature and shocks them out of being broody.

My blackrock Katie has gone broody as well. the only problem is that she is jumping out of her electric fence pen and is sitting on the bales og ahy in the barn. We kkep moving her but she keeps jumping out.

How long will this broody cycle last, she not even sitting on eggs.

and weve renamed her stroppy

Marge keeps pinching the other hens eggs and sitting on them, might try dunking her as we are worried shes not drinking enough in the warm temp!  Cant believe how stroppy she is, normally the greediest hen now only interested in getting back in the hen box, dont know if she would ever emerge if we just left her
