Felted Roof - should I remove it.
« on: May 27, 2010, 10:53 »
I've bought a second hand coop and run - mainly for all the other stuff that came with it.

However - long term - I am thinking the two coops and runs I have will be useful for quarantine/sick bays.

The new coop has a felted roof but it's pretty well stuck down.  The second hand one however, he has felted it himself, using staples and the odd tack.  I am very tempted to remove it all.  It looks like a trap for bacteria and mites to me.

What do you think?

If it were my coop (and its not) i would replace the roof with coroline, just gives the red mite one less place to hide ;)

Touch wood, never had mites, but built our coop with corregated bitumen roof rather than felt  for just that reason.

Think it does provide good housing for the small red ones, so probably best to replace.

Hubby says don't take it off in case it's not waterproof without it - BUT - it's coming off - it's only about 18months old so it should be OK.

If not, well Coroline sounds a good idea :)

Thanks both.

Well I was thinking that felting would be a place for the mites to hide and very difficult to get at them to disinfect?

It's gone - and a good thing too - the water was getting trapped between the wood and the felt.  Wouldn't have lasted long.

Wondering whther to have the roof alterred so it lifts off.  Won't be very easy to clean otherwise.

Creosote can only be used for retreating previously creosoted items and then only by professionals such as fence manufacturers and farmers. Please do not encoroage others to use it. You can use the modern substitute creocote.
Staffies are softer than you think.
