I quite like pruning ours. It takes time and precision so can't be rushed.  ;)

Pruning pyracantha requires..

Secateurs
Thick gloves
Dettol
Anti-septic cream
Box of plasters

 :D

And a swear-box no matter how careful you are.

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

some one might have said this before (i havent read the whole thread) but there is a type of blackberry known as himalayan giant that can be used as a 'natural' barbed wire when trained along a fence (plus the bonus of 30lb of fruit from each plant) as it its a crop i dont think you and be done for a thief 'getting prickeled :D' even if the thorns on these things are just plain not funny

many thanks Catweazle

You'd need to borrow Paul's pyracantha pruning kit ever year to harvest the blackberries

Oddly enough I try not to wear protective gloves until it's time to pick up and move all the prunings. I find that using unprotected hands makes me so much more careful that I rarely end up prickled.... slow & careful that's me most days.
