Timing is OK, buy oldest crown you get, if affordable. Saves the wait.

If you can team up with someone to share, T&M do a good deal on 20, so they come under a pound each and you get a few varieties that way, too. :)

When should I see any 'movement' in crowns planted last year? I've bought some 'out of date' and very cheap (I'm entirely useless at walking past a bargain :( )in ASDA last year and planted them beside rhubarb with the same history... nothing green emerged out of the soil all last season...

..is there any hope or was my bargain not a bargain at all?

Not yet, mid-late April possibly, can't remember specifically!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Normally, they should have grown that year, so there is the chance they are dead. :(

But, if you can, leave and wait for another season, as often happens with stressed out(for whatever reason) plants, they are actually alive, deep down there and come along later, once they recovered.

It doesn't always work out well to be frugal.

I assumed - probably wrongly - that they were bought late in the year. If it was the first part of the year - I would abandon hope!

I did not want to be that drastic, but most likely to be the case, as she says, did not emerge all season , so they were planted early, I'd guess.
