Upside down tomato's
« on: May 06, 2007, 19:49 »
I was flicking through the advertisements in one of my gardening magazines, to find a gadget to grow upside down tomato's, I looked at it and thought great idea, instead of fighting gravity go with it, apparently due to this fact bumper root system and crop.  However for three of them over £35 squid.  Not on your nelly I thought to myself.  So I got some average sized pots (sorry never know the size probably 9") cut a 2-3" hole in the bottom, made a cardboard cut out of the the base  (to stop soil and plant falling out and saving water) but allowing water through) which I then pushed down into the bottom of the pot, slit a cross in that to enable the flaps to be moved aside enough room basically to get the tomato leaves through.  Filled the pot with multi purpose and now they are hanging (used old wire hangers pierced through the top of the pots) both outside and inside.  The reasons for my efforts is I have an enormous amount of tomato plants for indoors and out so I thought bumper crop this year (loads of tomato sauce to freeze etc) avoid blight hopefully as it is on my plot.  Worth a try see what happens!!  Will keep you posted

I'm growing some tumbling toms that Munty gave me, and the biggest 4 are in the big hayrack hanging on the wall near the kitchen door.  I've also planted some marigolds in there as companions.
