Is it garlic rust?
« on: June 01, 2014, 22:50 »
Sorry for no picture.
Noticed today that my lovely strong looking garlic has got orange dots on the leaves and stalks.
Is this rust? And what should I do? I grew garlic last year and didn't have this problem

It sounds like rust. It often arrives if it has been wet.  If your garlic is not too badly affected, it won't make much difference, but if it is a bad attack it can affect your harvest.   You can try getting rid of the worst leaves if a mild attack.

Advice is to burn or dispose of affected leaves, i.e. Don't compost them, and don't grow garlic, onions or leeks in same place for 2-3 years.   Also helps not to plant too close together, but easier said than done when you are trying to shoehorn everything in.

Sounds like rust to me too, I initially started taking the leaves off but the new leaves still had rust.  One of the guys on the plot advised me to leave them they will still produce garlic bulb but they will be smaller.  I have took him to his word as I do not want the whole crop going to waste. However I have to say it has not affected my elephant garlic at the moment.  ???

Two years ago my garlic was so covered in rust that some of the leaves were more orange than green. I still got a good crop that dried and stored well.

Fingers crossed then as I have terrible rust on my garlic this year!

Snap! I took some rusty leaves of earlier in May, when I first saw it - but that didn't stop it  ::)

If I did it now, I'd have no leaves left
