Rust on Garlic
« on: July 11, 2010, 16:33 »
I always do well with onions and leeks with onions storing well and leeks standing well so we hardly ever have a gap in the year. I decided to try a few garlic this year for first time but it now has rust marks on it. Can that be treated or given the proximity to my other alliums is it safer to pull the garlic and destroy.
Many thanks

And there was I thinking it was a good natural antibiotic for my chickens Aunt Sally????

I to have had a problem with rust on my garlic and lifted them a few weeks ago. Noticed today I have rust on my leeks that are rust resistant variety. Onions also have mildew which is a right pain. Tried all sorts of chemical warfare which I normally avoid like the plague but to no avail. Both rust and mildew seem to have been contracted from over wintered varieties. I might give Alliums a miss next year!

Have a look at this thread posted earlier today on the same subject. It links to another thread!

There is no need to destroy your crop.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My garlic has been covered in rust for weeks, but it hasn't affected the crop. My leeks get rust every year, but again they just seem to grow through it. I think it looks a lot worse than it actually is  :)
Cheers, Comfortably Numb.

I'm just off down the greenhouse. I won't be long ..........................
