Had to google but, as I suspected, I think you will struggle in Cheshire.  One variety is Red Swan.  I've never seen it on sale here.

Thank you WG. it was just a thought, both my wife and me love chillies and we want to try and grow vegetables that we like.

You can grow the onions, garlic, chile peppers and caraway (I always add some).  Dried white beans work just as well BTW but I too like red beans in a chile con carne.

My Mexican friend hated me putting beans in a chile ... "It is chile con carne not chile con frijole", he says (expletives deleted).  We always argued but he is the reason I don't like spelling it as chilli.

I make my chili con carne with cubes of braising steak, hot peppers, ground cumin, ground onion seeds, some flakes of dried chilis,  one or two tins of tomatoes. Is this the right way?

I always slightly char the meat cubes for more flavour. I agree with your mexican friend btw, WG.

Google around, leisy, as WG says, it doesn't too much matter it just dried beans of your liking really. :)

What more matters, that you can grow it to dried beans on your weather.

Thank you, all advice taken readily. It is quite true as you say, it does not really matter about the bean type; the main thing is the vegetables should hopefully always be home grown where possible. We like our chile con carne quite colourful if not strictly traditional and always add sweet corn to it.

You can certainly grow the sweetcorn.  Follow the WYSIWYGGY link in my sig and look for answers (or post a question).

Nice one Paul.  No-one tried simply planting them from the grocery store then?   (why not, I get asked the same about garlic all the time!)

Not a recommendation BTW
