Wizzard beans lived up to thier name, they are not too tall and had 4 times the yeald of the aquadulce plants I was given. Stood out in the cold wind and snow no pests and a lovely flavour.

I had a massive harvest from my 'Masterpiece' broad beans (direct sown in Spring) - still have 20 2-person portions in the freezer.
I do sow about 50-60 seeds in a very small area. Works a treat.

Pinch out all the tops to deter blackfly.
The odd couple that did get blackfly were on the outside of the bed and could be plucked out without any bother or loss of harvest.

Hello,

I am thinking of autumn sowing peas and broadbeans, onions just wondering what everyones experience is from autumn sowings are they worth it? Is it more work than its worth? Do you sow direct? I have lots of fleece so can cover everything but would this be enough?

I only have broadbean seeds which are aquadulce so any suggestions on varieties that are worth growing over winter would be helpful.

If it is to much hassle I may just hang up the tools for winter...

Many thanks in advance.

Not any hassle, over-wintering mean just that, no cover is needed. Aquadulce is brill, sow it direct in October time. So a few spares indoors in pots, in some places wildlife takes them.

Autumn planted onions and garlic are also brilliant, nothing needs doing to these really. The broadies can do with a pick-me-up of seaweed shower or similar, come spring.

Autumn sown peas aren't worth the bother in my experience.

I grew aquadulce last year both autumn sowing the prior October and a spring sowing. Both cropped exact same time. But perhaps a benefit of autumn sowing is that its one of the few things you can plant around that time, and planting is more interesting than the endless digging.

How do you decide when to pinch out the tops?

I do it when they get covered in blackfly ... maybe that is later than I should though?

Once the plants are about thigh height and there are plenty of flowers developing.
