What Herbs do you like to grow?
« on: May 13, 2007, 18:10 »
I have an array of Thyme, Oregano, Rosemary, Bergamot, chocolate mint (yum), Lemon Balm and Lovage. I have just bought Lemon Verbena this week.

I love Coriander and Basil, but found that my coriander bolted when it was still small and my basil never grew very well.

I have never tried Chervil, Sorrel or Savoury. Any advice on growing these (or any other herbs)  or using them?
Organic :)

I normally grow 2 x 12foot rows of Basil and flat leaf parsely beacuase I use so much when cooking. I grow the basil under cloches unless it's hot weather.

This year I'm also growing -
Coriander
Rosemary
Sage
Thyme
Lemon Balm
Mint
Chives
Try my best to be Organic but don't always make it

Coriander for Leaf

I grow coriander as a short-term immature crop. Cut when 3 to 5" tall.

Broadcast sow, thickly, into a fertile pre-watered bed.   Rake in or, better still, cover lightly with soil by sieving.    A freshly dug bed is bad news since a mass of annual weeds are likely to compete - better to dig, then wait, hoe of the annuals & sow your coriander.  This is called a * fallow.

Keep moist at all times.   Harvest by cutting the whole plant at or near ground level.   Regrowth is patchy and very prone to bolt so resow.  Use three or more beds for continuous cropping.

I can't stop my fennel from growing.  It has sprung up everywhere.  I like to dry the stems and then put them on the BBQ for a lovely aroma, especially with fish.  Sure i saw Rick Stein do it or someone like that.
organic, till the slugs and bugs get the better of me.

Mine gets quite large (6ft) so i'm not too sure.  Perhaps a bottomless bucket to stop it spreading.  It may be worth a go.

Yes you can grow in a pot very easily.  I currently have both bronze and the normal fennel in pots, Dill too.

Thanks, will try to grow some.

Since getting my plot in Feb, i find myself going around the garden trying to find space for useful plants rather than just flowers so now i want to increase my herb collection.

I interplant herbs and flowers quite a lot.  Just leave larger gaps between your perennial herbs and pop in an annual flower of suitable growth habit.

 Shocked nobody mentioned ROCKET. Germinates in a few days, grows like a rocket and tastes delicious - flowers and all. :D
