Whatever you buy, try to buy from somewhere that has a fast turnover, and avoid bags that are faded, damaged or otherwise 'old looking'. I've seen some compost for sale that has obviously been sitting around for months, especially at smaller garden centres/farm supply shops etc.

I use JI.  no 1 for seeds, no 3 for potting on.  I can get 3 bags for £12 from my GC.  It works ok for me.

I think I am right in saying that JI mixes are not a brand, but a set of formulae that manufacturers must adhere to in order to sell 'JI Composts'
That being said, are there some manufacturers that produce better JI mixes than others? Or will I be more or less guaranteed the same quality whoever has produced it?

do any of you see whats available in your allotment shop, if you have one? having been disapointed with last years choice i went to ask the old timer who runs the shop and has had an allotment since the 1920's, what sells out first and he pointed me in the direction of growise multipurpose with reduced peat, 3 for 12 quid. there was a bag already opened for customers to see what they would be getting and he made me go and see and feel it.  it was far superior to anything else id ever used.  everything grew well and looked healthy, tho i did feed those plants that had to stay a longer time than i would have liked in their pots and modules.

Always had good results with JI seed compost...when it comes to potting on, why not reduce chances of being affected by variability in a single manufacturer's offering by buying three or four different brands and mixing them together?
