What to do when ducklings hatch, advice please?
« on: July 26, 2010, 11:40 »
Hello, one of my little ducks has been sitting on her clutch of eggs for the last three and a half weeks so they will be due to hatch in the next few days.  She made her nest in one of my hedges in the garden,(safe and secure from predators) comes of her nest twice a day to eat, drink and have a swim.  This will be the first time I've had ducks hatching naturally, so my questions are:  Is she likely to bring them back into the garden, and if so, will it be straight away, or will she keep them in the nest for a few days? And what should I do when she does?  I have several other ducks, including 'Dad', dogs, cats and chucks, all of which live happily together but have never seen day old ducklings before!  I have a spare duck house and can make a separate run for her as they all normally free range, but she will be happy on her own with her babies or will I need to put Dad in with her? Any advice would be much appreciated  :)

I hatched four ducklings this year from a call duck about 4 months ago they are as big as her now she brought them out to the pond straight away, hope you have a ramp so they can get out ok !She was very protective of them and still is got rid of the father as he tried to kill them so he could mate  again, feed them chick crumbs for a couple of months, i also have a dog and she is fine with them . :)
Good luck  :)

It has been mentioned on here if you feed chick crumbs to ducklings they must not contain ACS. Ithink the Smallholders range and Allen and Page do them and any that are organic. :)

Hello, thanks for the help, they should get back into the garden without too much trouble, they're right under the hedge, but I'll keep an eye out.  I've hatched ducklings from my incubator, just never had a broody mum until now, so I'm fully armed with Allen and Page waterfowl starter crumb. I'm hoping she hatches more than I've managed to!  I tend to get three out of ten as a rule.  I'l try and post some photos when it happens. I think I'll make a separate area for her with her own little house, just in case! Very exciting  :)
