another leek question !
« on: April 07, 2010, 17:04 »
Hi all
my sister has challenged me to a leek growing competition  the idea is to grow a fat leek! we are both growing musselburgh and I have started mine in pots to plant out later in the year.
My question is - if after planting out i save 2 and replant them into rich compost in pots and then pamper them until next year will they grow fatter? The other reason for keeping them in pots would be to let them go to seed and collect the seed for future use.

Thanx in anticipation  :)

Not that I know anything about leeks Sloworm but looking at last years leftovers of fellow plotholders they were huge in May before they went to seed.
I was donated a few and they were still very edible if cooked a little longer.
The seed heads were huge and purple when they were in full bloom and could supply enough seeds for 500+ leeks each for next seasons growing.
I'm definately leaving a couple to go to seed this year, why buy them if you can save them, afterall a quid in my pocket is better than in the seed companys :)
I'm banned for being obnoxious (not pompous as you might have thought)

Musselbrugh are what`s called blanch leeks, they grow up not out. If you want short, stocky leeks then you need to find a pot leek variety. :D
