Recommended Bantam Breeds, Old English Game?
« on: June 22, 2011, 08:30 »
Can anyone recommend a tough bantam breed that is happy to live free range during the day and in at night. I had thought about Old English Game but have heard they can be aggressive.  I have a Pekin cockerel and would not want endless fights and drama. I have kept a second cockerel for a number of years without too many problems. Many thanks.

I keep two Pekin hens that were widowed some years ago and they live in a free range environment with all my other standard sized hens. they are by no means bottom of the pecking order, make great broodie mums and are feisty and hardy but no aggressive. Mine are not very tame but I'm told they are easily tamed.

Many thanks for the replies.  I have 3 pekin hens with the cockerel but would like to try a different breed. I have layers kept separately which live mostly in a large run. Just wondering if anyone had experience of Old English Game bantams or can recommend another breed that I could try. Have a broody at the moment and would like to hatch half a dozen or so.   We have quite a lot of space and it is nice to see a few free range around the garden but having had some health problems with the Pekins would like to try a different breed.

We have spangled Russian Orloff bantams which free range the garden and are very attractive and hardy birds.  Great characters which I've been very pleased with though they are hard to find they are worth it.
