blackfly... help!
« on: July 06, 2008, 14:42 »
hiya

I've been out today, and the flowers on my pumpkins and squash are covered in blackfly, wilting and dropping off.

It is breaking my heart, as I was so pleased with my first attempts at these.

I've researched this here, and people talk about a 2% soft soap solution. Can you tell me how to make this please, is it just 2% washing up liquid in water? would ecver washing up liquid work as that's what I use? I'm sorry if I sound thick!

Oh, and another thing. SOMETHING is eating the leaves of my spuds. they are covered in tiny holes...could it be earwigs, as I seem to have an infestation of these?

thanks guys.

Loving the rain though!!

Hi clarabel,

Sorry no one has answered, can't help re the soap spray, but now the question has surfaced again, hopefully someone will see it.

Re the holes - could be any one of a number of bugs, capsid bug for instance, but this usually does not affect the yield and they can just be left alone.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I used water with a bit of WUL to spray on my runners to get rid of blackfly, it worked for about 3 weeks, although the weather may  have had something to do with that as well.

Apparently it coats their skin and stops them breathing, or just spray them right off the plant.

Liquid derris if the soap spray doesn't work.
I don't measure the WUL, just put a good glug in the srprayer bottle. and spray away, you have to repeat it fairly often.
I need to get round to it tmo, my courgettes are covered.

Good luck.
