Stupid question, Put some potatoes in last weekend of diffrent varietys, just wonderd how long they take to start showing on the ground. im not being impatient, just curious.

Well i would say not long now i 2 weeks as a rule . But with wet warmish
 weather could be quicker.

cheers for the advice, i was hoe'ing the bed today were i planted them, and i think some were showing but i didnt want to dig them up by mistake, will have to wait and see

Depends, or so I have read, on how advanced the shoots on your seed potatoes were when you planted.

And then, or so I understand, on the quality of the soil they are planted in.

The latter is something I've been amazed about, as I did an experiment where I planted in well tended, composted soil and also shoved a few in untreated soil. Needless to say, the potato plants in the good soil are twice the size and twice as healthy.

well my question has answered itself. 18 of the 20 i put in are now coming threw! some are quite big already. amazing it is!
