Chicken roof run - Covered fully or mesh?
« on: July 02, 2008, 11:12 »
Hi Chaps,

As you may or may not know I'm currently sorting out my shed and run. The roof on the run is metal panels, but not sure whether to leave it or take off and use mesh for the sunlight etc. The ground is bone hard and devoid of any vegitation or rain except the first yard near the front fencing.

What would be best?

Thanks,

Cudders

Hi Cudders.

I would personally remove the metal and use plastic panels instead. There's a good argument for a solid roof with biosecurity and keeping the run dry to keep the smell down but it does sound like it could be a bit dark.

We've got part corrugated plastic, part polythene sheeting and part open mesh. I plan to work towards solid over the lot one day but the money is going on non-essentials like food and petrol

I agree with Rob.  replace with corrugated clear plastic to keep it dry.  Give it a dig over tp loosen the soil and the chooks will be happy to dust bathe in it  Keep it dry will stop any smell and reduce risk of any worm or other problems.
