« on: March 25, 2009, 18:09 »
Just read about pots for clearing sites of weeds hmmm it does not say anything about how to plant them do i just dig a trench and put the seed in but i would need soil to build up around the growth.

I've never heard of using them to clear weeds.  They are used to help break up heavy ground though.

But then again, my spuds had so many leaves there were no weeds growing under them as it was too dark.

It's not so much that the spuds clear the weeds - YOU do in tending to them.

Firstly the planting, then the hilling up several times during the season, then the final digging up.

Certainly weeds NOT brambles!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

So if i dig a nice deep trench then plant my tubers leaving the soil at the side pulling out as much of the roots as possible i should be ok.  Or should i just dig it over propley and have done with it and not have the crop this year.

Depends what your weeds are, you won't get rid of stuff like bindweed that way.

Now - don't tell anyone this - but in my first year on a very overgrown plot, I gave it a good dose of Roundup, left it a week or so & then planted the spuds. Didn't get rid of everything, but I got a good crop & the ground was much clearer at the end of the season.

Depends whether you have a total aversion to chemicals or not!

Im not bothered by using Round up as we use it at work on the odd occasion and have about 40liters of Pro bio active in the store
