After a disaster with potato blight, I've probably got loads of tiny spuds still in the ground. These may or may not simply rot away but the area is too big to try and clear every last one of them by hand. (I'm no spring chicken and the thought of hours spent bent double looking for them makes my back ache!

As it's my own land and I've plenty of other areas for veg and I'm planning to grow fruit-trees and fruit-bushes on this area in future, I wondered, instead of pulling out all the volunteers as they appear, if covering the area with weed suppressing fabric between the fruit bushes/trees would kill them off

I should perhaps make it perfectly clear that I'd put all the tops and all the spuds I could reasonably recover in the landfill bin. The area in question is over 100 sq metres so you'll maybe understand the difficulty in following the counsel of perfection of rooting out every last pea-sized spud

I should think it would be fine.  There won't be any top growth from the spuds to infect elsewhere, nor any spuds being grown there to be infected underground.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
