Anyone grow their own turkeys for Christmas?

Hi I was just wondering if anyone has done their own turkeys?? My hubby is thinking about it, but I thought I read somewhere that you couldn't keep them in the same area as chickens. Is it just a case of not in the same pen? Would adjoining pens be ok???

Hi Sheridal

It's all to do with Blackhead a disease which will kill Turkeys. It can also affect chickens too although the mortality rate is less.
Chickens act as the host for the organism that causes blackhead.

To prevent the disease follow very strict sanitation in sheds, rotate the area they are kept on, keep young birds away from older birds and keep hens & Turkeys seperate.

I have kept both togeather and was lucky this did not affect Ben (Turkey). Think this was due to the fact I picked up poop from shed daily and washed down the grass. I also have alot of land for them to graze so maybe the bird to ground ratio helped :?

Hope that's of some help, turkeys make fab pets though u might get attached

Hubby is thinking of building a new enclosure next to the chicken shed, I am not convinced yet.

Is it that easy to get attached to something so ugly???

Yes
In  the begining you could kill them by saying BOO, as they get frightened very easily will huddle togeather & possibly suffercate or crush each other (if you have alot) :(

But once they get used to you & how you do things they'll want to be with you all the time :) Well that's how Ben was, she was very loveing and had to be cuddled at least twice a day in the morning and before bed

I've got some eggs due to hatch in a couple of weeks :D I'll be keeping them seprate this time as my numbers have increased an just feel it's safer :)

YES YES YES absolutely. Terence and Delilah are delightful. Delilah is very nosy and Terence very gentle. They are my pets and wont be for the table. I couldn't  I am also risking them being in with my chooks but then they are in an area of about 100' x 80' and the coop is very large too. How can you call this ugly:

Delilah

Terence

I think they are gorgeous, such characters
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!!
