What is a good storing onion ?
« on: February 02, 2012, 12:10 »
My stored ones have not kept to well over this warm winter with some even growing again with tips and roots

So I am looking for a better keeper to plant this season.

My "Centurion" have kept brilliantly the last 3 years. (Only been growing them 3 years!).
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Sturon, sets, someone recommended Hercules to me, easy to grow, lasted until about november then all of them rotted from the neck down, won't do them again >:( stored in the same conditions as my other onions.

sturon stores well into march/april if conditions allow it. last year i finished the last ones in april

always bought from wilkinsons, this year about £1.30 for 500gr enough for 120 sets very good condition none soft or rotting

I agree with engineer - sturon from wilkinsons has always done me ok, they are cheap and store well.

Onions grown from seed stor better than those from sets.  Onions must be correctly and well ripened before storing.

Coudn't agree more about the storing, i have mine stored in the garage in those blue ex mushroom trays which allows them to be stacked so the air can circulate, never had any rot in these  ;) except the hercules >:(

as for from seed, this is my first attempt at growing from seed with bedfordshire champion

What variety are they? Because, what Aunty said above is worth listening to and most available varieties should store reasonably well. Notable exceptions tend to be the large ones.

red baron, sturon and hyred F1 all store well for me over last few years, all from sets.
Over feeding/over fertilising can lead to soft onions that rot early - bit of a balancing act, many other variables come into play. I lost some to long period of deep cold we had a year ago.

The overwintered ones like Senshyu don't keep as well but I usually get mine to last till about November. After that it's the spring sown ones and I must admit that a lot of mine are starting to sprout now due to the general mildness of the winter. Sturon and Setton are good from sets but, as has been said, they must be thoroughly dry before storage.

I learnt a lesson this year when I lifted my Sturon too early and dried them of in the shed as I was a bit concerned that the weather was too damp outside. Almost all are now rotting from the neck. I'll leave them to die down naturally this summer under a cover of some sort to keep the rain off.

I grew sturon last year and we are still eating them. The drying out and proper storage like others have said are so important though.

I grew Sturon, Stuttgart and Red Baron. They're still OK but had to throw out some Red Baron last month that'd started to rot

Reds are generally said to be not so good storers as the brown skinned ones. However, it's early days.  Theoretically, you should go through your stored food every now and then, as often there is the odd bad one, which can spoil all of them.

I again would refer back to Auntie's post about seed grown storers. I once found some 2 year old red onions forgotten in the shed. Not rotten.
