disappearing potato leaves
« on: July 24, 2019, 16:37 »
HI
I wonder if anyone can tell me the cause of my disappearing potato leaves.
I'm growing maris Piper in a  bag ( experiment) and the stems and leaves look really healthy. Then last week I noticed the leaves are essentially being eaten right back to the stem. Spotted the finest caterpillar once but that is it.
Any ideas will this affect the spuds ie will the grubs have a nibble at those as well. Ive already grown swift charlottes and Wija this year without this problem appearing

Thanks in advance

Hi Twood
I have started growing spuds in bags too and been very pleased with the results.
As regards the phantom nibbler I would blame slugs or snails. Probably desperate for moisture if your weather is like ours! And yes they will attack the spuds too, so perhaps have a “furtle” to see how they are getting on.
Good Luck
Cheers HH
Keep digging
