mares tail
« on: July 27, 2009, 10:06 »
Although a newbie I am aware from previous forums that mares tail is, if you'll excuse the pun, a perennial problem. However I saw from the diary that a heavy concentration of glysophate was being trialled. Looking in the shops I see plenty of glysophate based products all of varying strengths. Any recommendations as to which product is the best?

hi Colin h, welcome to the forums :)

I think that the only way to get a strong concentration would be to buy the undiluted formula and to dilute it to a stronger concentration than recommended but I haven't done this so can't advise specifically.  Others will be along soon who do have experience of this.

If you've been reading other posts you'll know that mares tail (or feild horsetail) is tough to get rid of and even with constant hoeing and poisoning it can take years.  You will need to crush the leaves before applying the poison because horsetail has a waxy coating that resists the absorbtion.

It could be just as well to look out for the spore bearing parts in spring/early summer and to get rid of these otherwise more spores = more horsetail

Take a look at this link from RHS: http://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profiles0705/equisetum.asp

I've never been able to see the brown "spores" stage, is it just me?
