Mares tail
« on: April 30, 2008, 09:01 »
Whilst hoeing my beds yesterday I hoed the tops off emerging Mares tail spikes and chucked them.

Have I made it worse? I did try and dig it out, but it just snapped off anyway. I also (where I could) sprayed it with Roundup, is Roundup any good against it?

Thanks
First timer, NOT enjoying the backache anymore!

Keep hoeing it Fletch !  Never let it see a Sunday

It's difficult to kill with weed killer but if you want to try let it grow a bit and then stamp on it to bruise it before spraying.  It will absorb the herbicide more then.  Its waxy surface stops absorption but bruising breaks it down.

I just hoe it once a week and gently pull out longer bits, weakening it all the time.  Eradication is very difficult

Thanks for that, I can't believe I actually avoided hoeing big swathes of it in case I was doing the wrong thing

It's a good job I love hoeing, I'll make sure it NEVER sees a Sunday

Last year I found hoeing or digging out more effective than roundup, also a lot cheaper :D

there is only one thing that can kill mares tail and it takes about a full year ,

TAKE ROUNDUP AND MIXTURE B EQUAL PARTS

BEFOREYOU START SPRAYING  TRAMPLE THE MARES TAIL DOWN , TO BREAK UP THE MARES WATER PROOFING AND THEN SPRAY WITHIN 30 MINUTES , , EVERYTIME THE MARES TAIL RE APPEARS HIT IT AGAIN  WITH ROUND UP AND MIXTURE B,

What is 'mixture B'?

Could you take your caps lock off please Peter? It makes for difficult reading & is considered rude in postings, other than for emphasis. (I know this is not your intention).

Thanks.
