I sowed mine in small modules, put them in the propagator and most popped up within five or six days. Put them straight down in the frost free greenhouse so they have plenty of light. Lovely!

And then there are the Poona Kheera seeds from a friend... nothing yet after twelve days. I probably have enough plants without them but I really wanted to try these. Typical!

I just opened up the compost bin, and the squash seeds I put in there a week or so ago are six inches high!   ::)  Seemed a pity to dump potato peelings on them, but they won't be breeding true.   :(

The Law of Esszerodee has struck again...

All the saved seed has gone bad - not a single one to use, so we're back to square one...

Mrs Growster is kindly taking me to our favourite garden centre today, and what's the betting we just go out and buy some plants - I can't take the tension any more:0(

That's the problem with seed saving. One cannot just chuck them in an envelope till next year, (if only). There's lot's of conditions that they need. And lots that they don't tolerate.  :(

It works well with peas, beans, tomatoes, and lots of flowers of course, so we just save what we can automatically!

We've just bought three plants anyway, and as sure as eggs is eggs, the others will all just fly...

Cucumbers are a bit of a fiddle, but I save them year on year using the instructions on the Real Seeds site.

Having said that

I'm pretty sure those were mine.  It wasn't the easiest year to ripen seed off but the few I tried did sprout on kitchen paper, so I thought they would be OK.

I haven't even started cukes yet, so leave that one with me Sunny.  I'll do another germination test and if they are any good, I'll sort some more out for you  :)

Mine haven't even made it out of the compost this year.  ::)

Better late than never, one of mine made an appearance yesterday.

The old farmers used to say that sheep spend their time thinking of different ways to die. Seems this also applies to cucumbers.

Sorry to go off at a bit of a tangent, but i remember as a wee lad, my grandad used to have a sheeps head in a hessian sack in his water butt purely for watering the cukes....anyone know what that is all about?

Alas, i cant ask him, as he died when I was 11 and my dad has no idea either?
