Next year I will be getting a veg patch in the field opposite my house-can't wait as I only had a little one in the garden this year  :(

I am thinking about how big to make it ? What sizes are your allotments ? (metres preferably)

I want to feed a family of 4,all year if possible....

I want it manageable but not too small

Any info would be great,thanks

The first plot I took on was/is about 10m x 30m (300 sq m). I found that wasn't quite large enough and took on a part plot of just over 100 sq m. I reckon this would be about adeqaute.

Being a glutton for punshment, we later took on a 400 sq m plot so that we can grow a few flowers, have a good excess for family, neighbours, church coffee mornings etc..

I just like growing things!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I may run out of peas, believe it or not, despite the number I grew, but that's mostly down to the portions of them I put on my plate!

The only other thing I may buy is swede - but that's because they simply refuse to grow in my soil!

I have what our site call a mini pot - 8m x 7m approx. It was my first year as an allotmenteer (is that the correct term?) and i found it was easy to manage. I work full time so can only get there at weekends etc. I planted pretty intensively which certainly helped to keep the weeds down (there just wasn't room for them!) however i would have liked to grow more peas, but i didn't have room. My squashes were a disaster and although the weather didn't help, lack of space was a definite factor too. I also found myself having to climb over and around things and i couldn't use the hoe as everything was too close together. I think crop rotation is more complicated with a small plot too. So........... I now have the next door mini plot as well! It hasn't been touched for a year, so is rather overgrown and is going to take a lot of work over the winter to get it usable, but i'm looking forward to having a bumper crop of butternut squash next year, rather than the 1 solitary specimen i had this year!

My plot is approx 150 sq yards (15 x 10).  It does enough for me, but would in no way be big enough for anyone to be self-sufficient.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

My plot is absolutely tiny in comparison - approximately 7m x 10m!  Quite small even for our site.  My name is on the list for another one!  Fingers crossed that one of the surrounding ones become available for me.

It is approx 30 feet wide x 150 feet long, I know it falls into the +351sq meter rent band.. I've been told that it is roughly between 5-600sq mtrs... but I never was any good at maths... :D

That's 4500 sq feet. 1 sq foot = 0.09290304 sq m.

450 x 0.09290304 = 418 sq m.
