Potato blight
« on: October 21, 2008, 15:42 »
So the spuds planted so we could have new potatoes with our Christmas dinner have got blight. From brown spots on the leaves a few days ago to nasty withering now.

I know the foliage has to be burned and not composted, but do i dig them up now or what? A couple of plants seem to have escaped.

Growing salad leaves isn't rocket science.

Can we get a closer shot?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'm no expert but I'm sure one of the veg gardeners will give you an opinion on the picture.  Have you go a close up of the patches ?

They're just brownish patches on the leaves. Could it be that i've got too much muck in the bed where they are?

On 6th October the grass temp at our local weather station hit 0c, air temp of 1.7c. That's probably low enough to give them a nip. Looks about the same colour as mine that really got it in the spring.

I think that's frost burn your looking at not blight, there doe's not appear to be any halo's around the patches.

I too think it's late for blight, and together with Daves info it would also lead me to the same conclusion  :D

So leave 'em in and perhaps cover with a little fleece to help protect from frosts, Spud's are tender coming from a warmer climate than ours originally so Christmas spuds need a little luck  :D esp when planted outside.

The ones in the container in the (unheated) greenhouse are looking a bit grim too, so perhaps there was a temperature dip before I moved them in.

As you say, they are succulents, so prone to the odd nip.

We'll see how things go. Thanks for your help everyone. All is not lost I'm sure.

As you can see I can get back on photobucket again. Had a bit of trouble lugging the new iMac down the bottom of the garden to take the pic...
