Supermarket herbs.
« on: March 06, 2016, 19:00 »
May sound like a daft question but the ones you get in its in the veg section - any good for just planting on the plot? I've got quite a few herbs but want to grow coriander and basil and thinking it may be an easier option than growing from seed...

Cheers G

I've found that Thyme, being a woodier herb, can be broken into little clumps and transplanted successfully, when the weather is better.
I've had no success with Basil or Coriander, they're sown too close together to split without damaging the fragile stems/roots  :(

Makes sense thanks - I'll do the basil. Just been online and apparently the coriander seeds in the kitchen cupboard can be planted successfully too so I'll try them as a little experiment 😀.

I pot on supermarket basil with good success but it stays firmly on my sunny windowsill. Apparently you can grow it from cuttings:

I find coriander needs to be sown successionally as it bolts very quickly even if I pot it on from the supermarket. I tend to do a small pot every 2-3 weeks.

Thanks again - reckon I'll buy some mint if they have it - that just grows rampant! X

When you pot up supermarket basil into a larger pot you will soon notice the darker leaves and stronger scent. The nutrients in the "soil" they get given are the bare minimum needed to get them to your doorstep and not a jot more.

I do find I can split a small basil pot into two but not individually. You might want to consider growing it from seed yourself.
