Whos eating my garlic
« on: March 13, 2009, 18:54 »
:(  :( Something has nibbled my garlic leaves off at ground level.

No sign of slim trail, seen a few flying rats, tree rats and land rats around. Whos likely to be the guilty party? and more importantly whats the best way to keep them safe, I really dont want to have to nett EVERYTHING.

Someone else had that same problem recently, can't remember who now, but hers were rabbits (telltale droppings). But mice and pigeons will happily oblige. Only way is to net them with either a hoop affair or just bend some wire mesh over the area so the garlic shoots can get through later but high enough that the pests can't keep feasting. The shoots should still keep coming out though you may not have as many cloves within the head as originally growing.

Rabbits maybe? do you have them round your area.

Best put it on my list of jobs to do tomorrow, i'm quite attached to my garlic.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

No rabbits round here - they've all been eaten  :tongue2:

I've dropped some netting over them ... if they still get eaten it must be mice, I might plant some peas out to distract them.

The leaves on mine were eaten by rabbits when we had the snow they have grown back now and they haven't touched them since.

I came upon my plot yesterday and found that two of my garlic (planted in December) have curled leaves.  They are still green, we have no mice, rabbits and the flying rats don't land on any of our lotties - there's a chap who breeds them for racing, but they are so well fed, that funnily enough, they don't both with our plots - but saying that we have a few cats that wonder about.
