Victoria Plum Tree Question
« on: June 20, 2008, 11:57 »
I bought a Victoria Plum Tree for my garden nearly 3 years ago and it has been happily growing and now stands at about 5 foot. It is branching out well and appears happy and healthy (even though my daughters pony ate the top off it!).

This spring we have had a few flowers on it but no fruit.  Is it too young to bear fruit or does it need another plum tree nearby so they can pollonate each other?

I really have no idea as to when and if it should bear fruit, so would be grateful for any advice

Claire

I bought a 2 year old vic tree and it had a plum on it when it was planted. This year there are several. Victoria plum trees are self fertile so it may be that when it had blossom on it , it may have been hit by frost which would have damaged the fruit buds. I have a cherry the same this year.T he blossomwas papery and crumbled.  :)
Oh for those halcyon days of England long ago

It said it was on the label and was bought from a reputable garden centre, so will just have to keep my fingers crossed.

Thanks for the info

Victoria Plum Tree Question

Hiya

We have a plum tree in the same area as our raspberries and redcurrents. We were feeding the raspberries for a while a couple of years ago and so feeding the plum tree too. Anyway, we mentioned to the garden centre (two years ago) that the plum tree (self fertile) had never grown fruit (in 10 years!!).

We brought a leaf to the garden centre and the guy said the leaves were really really healthy and had we been feeding it.

Yup we reply, we had been putting down 'rooster pellets'.

There's your problem he said, stop feeding it.

This year we have quite a few plums growing for the first time!

Hope this helps
