What's on its last warning?
« on: April 06, 2014, 20:14 »
Last year I warned the strawberries - produce or it was off to the compost heap, they didn't deliver so out they came. This year Im looking at my sickly blueberry bushes and issuing the same ultimatum.

What's on it's last warning on your plot?

I have a hawthorn hedge at home which has not been trimmed since I moved here in 2006.  I tell farmers to trim in alternate years so as to allow hedges to flower, so by 2008 at least I was expecting a snowy mass of May blossom and loads of berries for the birds.  Last year my hedge finally managed about 20 clusters of flowers (on four or five large bushes which are rapidly approaching small tree size.)

Trouble is it would be more trouble than it's worth to rip it out...

Potatoes.  Of my 3 years I have lost total crop (admittedly small) to blight twice so put in bags but the blackleg got them the third time. Last chance this year.

Borlotti Beans
Soya Beans

Borlottis perform but I'm not convinced they are worth the space for the yield...  :(

Oh... and redcurrants which perform too well but take too long to pick and I don't really have use for them. Is that unfair?

Cauliflower and aubergine have been excommunicated this year. They will be followed out the door by the Summer raspberries if they don't get their act together with the manure they have had.

I'd like to suggest greenhouse cucumbers but up to now they've never lasted long enough to even get their first warning.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Garlic is on it's last warning on my plot! Rust on the bulbs the last two years, and as a result they've been very small. Going for spring planted this year rather than late autumn to see if that makes a difference.

Spend ytd: £293.44 (setting up plot 29 has been expensive) Harvest ytd: £163.93 (as at 8/8)

Spring onions for me, I've tried all different types of compost and various suppliers.
I have a sowed a few hundred this year from a different supplier and different compost so this is there last chance

Celeriac, never got anything bigger than a plum - trying Ilona this year as recommended by someone (sorry forgot who) on here - and Florence fennel.

I can't believe that my verbena bonariensis have actally germinated!!! Celeriac needs a really long season. Mine are only just swelling to a good size from being planted ladt year!! Not doing parsnips this year.....a lot of work for only using a few per year.
