Chicken drinkers
« on: August 17, 2010, 09:34 »
I have tried various chicken drinkers but can't seem to find an inexpensive one which doesn't spill all the water as soon as the chickens attack it !  Has anyone made their own version?  I have seen commercial ones with a large glass jar for the reservoir and wondered if any 'hen people' had tried adapting one?  Would be interested to hear your views and advice.

I know what you mean, I've tried a couple but they are emptied by the hens almost as soon as they are filled. I've had them hanging up, sitting on the floor, weighed down with a rock all to no avail so I have resorted to using the hanging bowls for rabbits etc. The hens seem to like them and I can fill them up easily with a bottle, they just hang off the wire fence.

I have had the same problems, either knocked over or filled with the bark scratched up from the pen floor.  I now use a child's galvanised watering can and keep it in the corner of the pen. They have only ever knocked it over once. I did intend to sit it in a small tyre or something similar but haven't needn't to.  Don,t know if this helps but it works for me!! :)

I also have a mushroom type under a garden chair where they freerange, there's never any competition for this one so it has never been tipped over.

These ones are our favourites and Joyfull likes them too!

Legs to raise them 3" off ground and they don't spill.  These ones hold 12 litres, but they do a 6litre and a 3 litre too but the 3 litre ones don't have legs

I have the ones Grannie mentioned and they are brilliant, They are British made, the plastic doesn't become brittle, easy to fill and carry. They have a measure on the inside so if you have to administer any antibiotics it is easy. I have some with the feet on and others that I have removed them.
Staffies are softer than you think.
