Is there any use for my greenhouse over the winter?
« on: September 30, 2007, 16:20 »
I have tried to check if it has come up before but I really struggle with the search facility, so sorry if it has and I am repeating a topic.

I have just cleared out my toms today; my cucumber and chilli plants still going strong.   :?: But it got me thinking-is there anything that I could plant in an unheated greenhouse over winter :?:

I do live right by the coast so the temps aren't as cold as other places, but still freezing at times.

If I could ensure that the inside of the greenhouse never ever went below freezing, if it was me, i'd get some chilis started so they would have a flying start for next year. I don't know how "correct" that is, but if i had a greenhouse, it is what i'd try.

Thanks for you reply, I couldn't ensure it never went below.  I just know that we are normally a few degrees above what other places would be.

I could start the chilis off inside though.

if yer bang on the coast you'd almost certainly get away with it. Might be a different matter if you're further inland in a hollow, or inland and elevated.
If it was me, I'd get a max/min thermometer and a small (gas/paraffin) greenhouse heater. Might get some bargains this time of year down at the garden centre.

I start to get ground frosts usually in November, so I'm going to bring my chilis indoors 2nd/3rd week of this month.

another way to look at it is that greenhouses in general extend the growing season.. so, try now what you might not otherwise

if you insulate the greenhouse with bubble wrap you can bring the temps up by a couple degrees  this will be enough to keep frost off and help with lettuce etc . insulating the trays or tubs from the ground and around the sides also helps as does making a second greenhouse over the plants using plastic  dry cleaning bags
