Empty greenhouse in winter...
« on: August 03, 2010, 12:30 »
I've got a huge greenhouse on my plot that is currently full of toms. cucumbers, chilis, aubergines etc.  I'm starting to think what I can do with it when I've harvested all my current crops and it's going to be standing empty all over the winter.  Anybody got any ideas?

The biggest problem unless you are heating the house is temperature fluctuation , not many plants like it hot during the day and freezing at night.

salad leaves, dwarf beans, early daffs, cabbages etc etc -- try googling polytunnel growing or something like that and then see what would work equally as well in a glass greenhouse. Previous comments are important though. If frost severe enough to penetrate then crops that are frost sensitive will be lost but cover like polytunnel or glass can extend season by 6 to 10 weeks. If sunny even on a cool can get very warm so if you can ventilate and adjust watering etc and even throw a fleece or two over crops if all helps bet teh extremes. Also watch dont overwater as mould etc can be a problem

I deliberately leave my empty and get it as cold as possible, then I fumigate it with a sulphur candle.  Last winter there was six inches of snow on the roof, which kept the fumes in nicely.

In the green house at school we grew winter lettuce, mixed salad leaves, spring onions (Winter white lisbon) and started off leeks etc early.

Unheated greenhouse btw and it all coped with the snow and low temp without nay problems  :D

Last year I grew lettuce, onions and had other stuff overwintering in there, so didn't clean it out and the spiders this summer are

So, this winter, it's all coming out and getting a VERY good clean.

I'll be overwintering my strawbs, sweet potatoes and chilli/peppers in mine, along with the patio planters from home. Will also have some Christmas spuds in there. Should be very cosy!  :)
