When to start broad beans?
« on: August 17, 2009, 08:15 »
I know, I know, far too early at the mo, but I am now emptying out and have ground where me spuds were which is beginning to sprout a healthy weed crop. I have already got PSB, kale, leeks &  parsnips, am planning to try and overwinter some broad beans and japanese onions.
Do I sow the beans direct or start 'em off in pots and WHEN please? I believe Aqua Dulce Claudia is the beastie i need.
thanks
JMW

I'm starting my broad beans off direct mid to late September.

Aqua is the variety you need to overwinter.

Try growing some Green Manure like Mustard to cover the ground before the beans go in.

Quick growing, will block out most of the weeds and adds humus to the soil.

PUP!!
Top tip for camping....don't go.

Hi JMW.
I probably won't sow THESE much before October TBH. I now only sow in trays, and transplant (when big enough, i.e. 3-4" tall)

Oh, and sow a second lot a week or two later. ;)

Usually, something decides to have a go at pulling them out, and I end up filling in the gaps.
Life begins... On the kitchen windowsill.

yes you can, i grew them last/this year, some planted direct into the ground in october, then i planted some more direct into the ground in march and some in pots in march which went out in april. to be honest by may they had all caught up with each other and cropped pretty much around the same time, the only advantage i can see to planting them in october is that it is nice to see something growing through the winter.

Thanks all - where's the best place to buy mustard for green manure? I've saved some mustard green in snow for winter salads, but assume that's not the same?

Agricultural mustard is the one you want. Not the salad stuff.

Kings Seeds. A few of the starter packs should help.

Ta Pompey - just need to wait for pay day - as it's the school hols my pay drops as I lose all me overtime, just as the kids are hell-bent on spending it all - time to get out the fishing nets & jam jars & send 'em up the ford - they always moan like hell but come back knackered and relatively clean having fallen in a few times
