Just got next years seed catalogue
« on: August 21, 2007, 13:32 »
Hi all, I have just received my Kings seed catalogue from my allotment sec and I am looking forward to spending hours cross referencing varieties from the net and my books. I would be grateful if you would post your favourite varieties of veg (eg taste, growing success, yield). Many thanks if you can, this years disaster is slowly fading as I dream of more success next year. Happy Gardening.

Potatoes : Red Duke of York (early), Pink Fir Apple (maincrop)
Lettuce : Lobjoits Green Cos
Garlic : Porcelain (don't know which type)
Courgette : All Green Bush, Sebring (yellow)
Carrot : Nantes

Thanks for that, I didn't consider the amount of varieties lol, I would be grateful for some favourites I think, otherwise people would be on here for ever.

My Kings seed catalogue hasn't arrived yet - hopefully it will soon!

A few of my favorite are;

Tomato Tiny Tim - I like this variety as it is great for containers and small gardens. Produces great crops or small cherry tomatoes
Tom Thumb lettuces - Small crunchy lettuces. Are ideal for 2-3 people as they are pretty small.
Golden Gourmet Shallots - Medium sized shallots which are great in a range of dishes.

They are my top 3 at the moment!

My favourites are:-

Minicole cabbage which doesn't grow huge and stands well in the ground.
Blue Lake climbing french beans have a great taste.
Imperial Green Longpod broad beans taste lovely and you get big pods filled with beans.

There are many more!!

I'm so new to this that I don't have favourites yet. What I have done is ordered varieties that others grow successfully on the site and especially those I've tasted and liked (they give me quite a bit really until my own are ready to eat).

So I shall be making notes :)
Lynne.

So much to do, but so little time.

Funny this should appear now - I've just finished re-sorting the seeds section of the web site. Checking valid links etc for over 1,000 items. Deep Joy!!

Anyway - my tip is to look for varieties with the RHS Award of Garden Merit. They always do well for you. Many seeds are optimised in the breeding for farmers but the RHS AGM seeds are definately gardeners varieties

Full Info: Vegetable Seeds, Fruit and Nut Trees

Even if you buy from a shop, you can check out the varieties.
Check out our books - ideal presents

Sweetcorn - Swift F1 grows to about 4ft high and is medium length cob. 2 - 3 per plant, a determined plant despite the bad weather and my slack weeding, it appreciated being earthed up every now and then. 20 out of 24 germinated, 19 took.  Will go for around 36+ next year.

Courgette - Patriot F1 (Mr F again), planted 5, only one has stormed ahead and produced in abundance - am trying T&M Defender next year as I got them on the half price sale.

Tomato - Moneymaker in the greenhouse - boring but dependable, thin skin, good taste, no splitting, generally well-behaved.

Sweetcorn and Courgette started off in pots, then transferred to a clay, but manured soil in that sunny weekend of May.

I can recommend:

Carrots : Maestro - which we have grown this year with success (no sign of carrot fly - these may be slightly resistant)

Cobra : Climbing french beans which have been excellent

shall have to try this if I remember, no. 2 son will be amused as he is the original tiny tim, being a tim and also tiny!  Actually we used to call him tiny tim at one point in his life, not sure he'd appreciate it now as a teenager though!

Just to add - tomato piccolo is really nice. I didn't grow them myself but was given some to taste. Excellent cropper, sweet taste,

Onion Ailsa Craig does really well for me and North Holland Blood Red is a wonderful spring onion.

Cauliflower Pavillion (T&M) was another good one for me.
