Cauliflower question
« on: June 12, 2010, 18:58 »
Hi folks,

I'm attempting to grow cauliflowers, in this my second year on the plot. Popped down the allotment today and the heads have started forming! Yay!

Question is: I've heard a lot of people saying you should cover the heads using the leaves of the plant, but how is this done? Do you use string? snap a few leaves over?

Any advice on how other peeps do it muchly welcomed!

Chris

I use cloths pegs

I really do - I just bend some of the leaves over and hold them in place with a couple of pegs  :D

Don't leave them too long. A lot of folk think that the longer they leave them, the bigger they will be.

This is true enough, but they get very big when they suddenly "blow"!

Keep a good eye on them.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

DD you're right, there was nothing there last week, now the heads (not quite firmed up yet) are about 2 inches across!

Aunt Sally - don't clothes pegs damage the leaves?

If you can see the heads, don't expect startling results.

As for the leaves, at this stage it doesn't matter two hoots if they get damaged. I snap them to fold them over the crud.

But I'm not as gentle as Aunty.
