Duck eggs giving off "gas"
« on: June 13, 2009, 09:55 »
Further to my earlier post regarding incubating duck eggs with chicken eggs, I have just been chatting to my neighbour who said that he thought you couldn't incubate duck eggs with chicken eggs as the duck eggs released some sort of gas which was detrimental to the chicken eggs!
Anyone heard of this?

Never heard of it. Would be surprised if it were true as it would mean that there was a pretty fundemental difference in the biochemistry of ducks and chickens.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Never heard of this, I know plenty of people who have incubated Duck and Chicken eggs together, just removing the eggs to a seperate hatcher when they are due as I have been told the Duck eggs need a higher humidity to hatch than the chickens, but the same during incubation.

The only time an egg gives off gas is when it's been partially incubated then died :(

I picked up a swans egg off a raft of flood debris and it was actually fizzing...
I put it down again VERY gently and made off to a safe distance  :)

Hi Sarah. They be runners!!!! ;)
Long term plan is to dig a proper pond in the field, and then I can have swimming ducks, too :D
A digger man will be coming to demolish the old shop next door to us in the next couple of weeks and do the groundwork. While he is here I am going to hi-jack him to dig a couple of test holes in the field. Then we'll get him to dig a big hole which will hopefully fill with water. We have gravel and clay seams and wells and underground springs and all sorts of funny stuff (spent a lot of time chatting to local farmers) so hopefully will manage to sort something out!! I love it when a plan comes together  :D

Sounds fab :D

I'd love to get a man and his digger down here  Sadly very single track road so it's spade and crowbar for me when I do ponds :(

Please keep us updated with how the pond and the eggs are doing oh and that includes pics (the pond) :D

Sarah :)
