Potatoes - stem rotting away
« on: June 20, 2009, 21:39 »
Hi,
Things on the new lottie were going ok until this week when I noticed one of my spuds had leaves that were curling upwards and wrapping right up and its growth was really stunted compared to its neighbour which look really well. Today I went up there and gave the leaves the slightest tug (and I mean so very light) and it came away from the stem just under the soil - and lt looks rotten and soggy....

what could it be? is it likely to spread to my other spuds and can I do anything about it?

I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

had a good look, but dont think thats it cos where the stem has rotted its not a black colour just very mushy, and the leaves didnt change colour just curled upwards really tightly.

sounds like potato blackleg , pull them up , dig out the  potatoes and burn or bin them , the rest of your crop should be ok ,

We have noticed on our allotments this year, that some of the potatoes are showing signs of what LOOKS like blackleg, but is in fact stress caused by the dry weather we have been having.
However, if your stems are rotting, it does sound more like blackleg. :(
