Hollow stem
« on: July 06, 2016, 15:04 »
Hi chaps ... my broccolli and cabbage have hollow stems, not too tragic as the rest of the 'heads' are good and firm and, I guess, more than edible ... I understand that it's some kind of deficiency is there anything I can do next year to improve my brassicas.

Many thanks ... Roger

Sometimes the deficiency is caused by a shift in soil pH - some chemicals become less soluble and so not taken up by the plants.  As brassicas favour a raised pH, try adding some horticultural lime to the planting hole (and this also reduces the risk of introducing clubroot to the plot/garden)
