Elephant garlic
« on: April 13, 2022, 09:47 »
Put a short row of elephant garlic sets in just to try.
It seems they're a variety of leek and our site has those leek moths or similar.  So wondering if I should net them.
Anyone know if its necessary

Growing them a couple of years. No problems BUT not even heard of leek moths. Suggest a experiment cover most leave a few for the leek moths see if they are interested. I am not on a  allotment.

Leek moths and allium leaf miners can attack garlic, onions, shallots, and even chives, but I've found leeks themselves to be by far the biggest sufferers.

Elephant garlic is actually more closely related to leeks than garlic - on that basis it could be more at risk.

Hopefully someone will come along and tell you that it is rarely affected, even where one or both pests is known to be present (mesh netting is such a faff isn't it?)  :nowink:
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I've never found it to be so. I use scaffolder's netting, available in various widths, lengths and colours from the bay of E (and other places) stretched over hoops of alkathene water pipe (cheap enough from Screwfix but cheaper still from a skip) and held down by old bricks, which are far more easily removed for access than rows of fleece pegs, which really are a pain!
