Shopping list for the basic essentials
« on: May 07, 2010, 17:16 »
Hi all,

Me again hehe

Apart from chicken feed and bedding what should I get for the shelf ready for when the ladies move to their proper home. If I can get buying stuff now I can spread the cost a bit and shop around for best prices
..

thx in advance chook lovers!!

bedding, hemcore/dust extracted sawdust/shavings etc(whatever you use must be dust extracted/suitable for horses)
garlic granuals for the water
poultryshield/jayes fluid
dustpan/brush
marigolds(for poop scooping)

first aid kit
rescue remedy(to calm stress)
purple spray( an antiseptic that disguises sorenss)
frontline(for crawlies)
flubenvet(wormer)
wound powder(helps to stop bleeding)
vasalene(prevents frostbite on combs/wattles)
met-a-cam(anti inflam/pain relief)
baytril(antibiotic)
nail cutters
sharp sissors
spray on plaster, germoline

I'm sticking with you from now on Nige. You're asking all the questions I haven't even thought about yet  :D

Great list Lizzie. I think I've got a long way to go before I'm ready for the responsibility of owning chucks

At least I've got the most important thing - the JD

you may not be able to get antibiotics and metacam until you have a poorly chicken as the vet should ask to see them before prescribing.  :)

Hemcore seems a good product for an urban garden for pong reducing, does Granny or Joyful know where to buy it in our area ?

I buy mine from a local horse and pet feed / garden centre in Pinchbeck but there is also a place in Heckington near Sleaford although these are slightly more expensive.  :)

virkon s is a liquid disinfectant for inside the house, stalosan f is a powder or use in the run.
both are bacterial disinfectants and should help keep bugs at bay. make sure you poop scoop as much as you can

if possible reduce any dust in the coop, try to use liquids inside only, poultry shield and red mite liquid concentrate for spraying, mix DE with a liquid to paint on the ends of the perches to act as a barrier against red mite. do the spraying and allow to dry when the girls are out.

rapport is a new product from the makers of hemcore, made from oil seed rape stems, and a bit cheaper then hemcore
