OK, final chrysanth question of the season (I hope!); average distance between plants, what d'you reckon, 1ft 1.5ft? Thanks, Jude.

If you put them out at 18" each way then that will be fine you will need room to get
in to weed and remove the side shoots. Put a 4ft cane in for each plant I put them in before planting out.

Anyone grown "indoor" chrysanthemums in an unheated greenhouse?

I'm considering this (if I am not too late to order some) because an elderly neighbour is concerned that her greenhouse is unused - last year we grew tomatoes in there for her but I'm not sure I will have time to tend them  so indoor chrysnthemums might be an alternative needing a little less time.

Any pointers would be wonderful  :)

Neal, thanks for the info - I'd never have thought about a stake for them! Learner I had a mail order catalogue arrive yesterday for chrysanth cuttings and some of those were indoor ones, I think they'd be a great idea as they'll keep going into the depths of winter. Jude.

Indoor Chysanthemums known as Lates are a lot more  time and trouble than tomatoes.
They are grown the same as earlies up to the 5" pot size but then are moved up to a 9"
pot for the rest of the growing year. They are placed in the greenhouse around mid September for flowering November/December depending on the cultivar grown.
A close eye has to be kept on water and a feeding program also has to be kept.
Ventilation can also be a problem any damp in the autumn will cause damping
of the blooms. This just gives you a very brief outline. They can be placed in the greenhouse after the toms are out. I don't grow them just too much trouble.
Good Luck.

Thanks for the information Neal - very timely as I was going to attempt to order some on Monday!

I thought I'd just be able to stick the things in the ground, fedd and water then let them get on with it apart from some watering and piching out here and there   ::)

On second thoughts I'll toddle over to the neighbours greenhouse and stick in a few tomatoes  ;)

Money saved  :)
