Picked up my hens only yesterday and have noticed today that one of the Goldlines walks around with her left eye closed.  She does open it occassionally, but then closes it again.  Just picked her up and there isn't any obvious swelling or water/eye gunk.  It did look like there were a couple of tiny feathers growing like eyelashes from the top. I gently tried to wipe these away which distressed her.

I'm not experienced enough to know whether she's under the weather, but she has spent most of the day under the hen house (but the food is there so is this significant?).

Any suggestions?

My personal opinion would be to take her back, the risk of the eye problem being caused by a respiratory infection is too great.

Spoke with the breeder tonight and he suggested taking her back too.  Thanks

Turns out it is red lice which has got under her eye lid, poor thing.  Only had them 2 days I'm already up to my eyeballs in disinfectant!

Not a good idea to get anything from that breeder again.  His chook houses obviously have red mite unless you have used second hand chicken accomodation or equipment.

What a start to chicken keeping As Aunt said check the new ones for lice.
