Bath Tubs
« on: April 27, 2010, 16:05 »
Hi,

I've acquired a couple of bath tubs for use on my plot. Two wee questions:

Do I need to do anything in particular to make them suitable for planting (drill more holes, put gravel in the bottom)?

Are there veges that are better suited for growing in them? I was thinking one for salads, maybe the other for leeks (the irony of leeks in a bath is winning me more than the principal).

Thanks

As you already have the plughole for drainage, I would set it slightly on the tilt so that the excess water drains out of the hole. I would also put some gravel in to help with the drainage, and also a couple of tiles over the plughole so it doesn't get blocked with soil. Then - plant what you want with the compost you have.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I acquired one during winter.
place on level surface (bathtub is slightly tilted in angle to drain water)
put cardboard at bottom
three bags of 10mm gravel from Beeq
got free topsoil at that time
and seeded carrots and marigolds
covered with netting
you can certainly grow herbs/carrots and anything possibly you want
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

I've got one of those as well  :)

Thankfully her passion for freshly picked peas is stronger than her sense of tidiness.

Our Garden looks dapper right now, the better half spent a whole day painting the fence's and she even laid the turf when i done my back in hahahha we have a few lettuce, radish, carrots and some fruit bushes in there but its all tidy.

We have an old tin bath at the plot that we use for stones and rubbish, but the better half did say we should use it the other day for something more productive.
Thanks

I know they're not veg, but in The Edible Garden, Alys put two blueberry bushes in her tub saying they'd be perfectly happy in ordinary compost with an annual mulch of rotted pine needles.

She also mentioned you get a far better crop with two plants due to them cross pollinating.
