seeds growing very slowly

I have planted tomato seeds and they are all taking their time getting to grow I  planted about 8 weeks ago (late I know) any suggestions?  They get plenty of light and I have potted them in larger pots from the seed trays, but still nothing much! If they would get 4 leaves I would be happy :(

Hi Pamela - sounds like they don't like the compost to me. Possibly it's stale or not very good quality?

As a back up, sow some more in different compost. Bound to perk up the first lot (the law of sod!)

Cheap compost is often false economy - and yes, that's the voice of bitter experience speaking :)

How old are the seeds?  Did you plant them too deep?
They hardly need covering at all ...my dad covers his with damp sheet of newspaper until they sprout.

They came up within a week of planting (in different compost) and it was when they got to the transplant stage I bought a BIG sack of the compost and repotted them on and that was about 6 weeks or more ago!
Yesterday I bought a ´good´compost, much finer and not so much woody bits and repotted on all of the seedlings.  3 hours it took me!
Gave them a good water and now will feed them.  Fingers crossed they will catch up as they were my ´special´toms... Black Cherry, something gold, green grape and roma.  The toms in the garden from the garden centre are just ´normal´toms but bearing loads of fruit!
Pamela (in a getting hotter at last Spain)

In new compost you shouldn't need to feed for a few weeks - hope that's solved your problem.

Seems to be a weather pattern here - good in the UK - bad in Spain and vice versa.
