 B+Q - Verve Multipurpose Compost (125L) @ £5.98 (4.8p/l)

We get through quite a few of these, it needs sieving and the sievings will break down on the heap or be used as a mulch, the compost can be stretched quite well to make a wonderful potting compost by adding native garden soil or loam and sand (4:2:1).

This compost has proved to be good (for us anyway) however my only beef with B&Q's Verve compost is whoever is asked to replenish stock from a pallet insists on using a knife to remove the shrink wrapping, this causes bags to open, which are followed by the publics hands dipping in to feel test it, this makes bales later in the season heavy for rain getting in and invites fugus gnats to lay eggs in the tiny holes of the good bales, which you then take home and multiply (either that or the factory where they are bagged up needs a good sterilizing), this made us make a further purchase to remove these fungus gnats from indoors.
Generally JI 2 is our favourite for later on or for over wintering pot grown plants.

We are hoping to do an experiment to see if matured fine leaf mould impregnated with Comfrey will work as this would save us £££'s lol

I had a lot of fungas gnats in Verve MPC which was a sealed pack. I'm glad I only bought the one, but it meant the peppers I was overwintering were thrown outside  >:(

I realise that for many it's probably too early to say how well any given brand of compost actually performs, but it would be helpful if you gave some sort of description of the appearance and apparent quality, otherwise this thread will become predominantly just a list of available compost brands!  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

The compost is very dark in colour,very fine loamy I think is correct! doesn't have a damp smell that some composts have.

Miracle Grow seed & Cutting compost: was a bit unsure as it has added nutrients and generally speaking I prefer something less rich for sowing. Slightly on the coarse side for very small seeds to be sown directly, but onions are up and sweetpeas are thriving. Chillis are just fine too.

Aldi's seed compost: much finer and will use this for celery and celeriac.(Also bought a sieve just in case  :lol: )

Somebody did  ::)
